Gordon Hamilton- CHief Coach
Joining FRC in 2006, Gordon brings more than three decades of university, national, and international coaching experience to the Florida Rowing Center. His university coaching has included MIT Head Men’s coach for 20 years, Williams College, and University of Virginia. He has coached US women’s sweep and sculling national teams at the World Championships, Goodwill Games, and World University Games, in addition to international crews from Puerto Rico, Peru, and Brazil. Gordon is regularly a guest coach at Cambridge University Women’s Crew (England), Open Water Rowing Club (CA), Craftsbury Sculling Center (VT), and is the chief coach at Cambridge Boat Club in Cambridge, MA. Harvey Rubenstein- Coach
Harvey learned to row at Wayne State in Detroit and went on to represent the United States in the 1962 World Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland in the men’s 4+ event. He also represented the U.S. in the 1961 and 1965 Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv. Harvey recently retired from a 40-year career in teaching and coaching a high school rowing team in Michigan. cindy shirts- COACH
Drawing on her background as a competitive swimmer and coach, Cindy prepared at the Olympic Training Center where she focused on technique and biomechanics. Cindy joined the FRC staff in December 2014 as an intern and quickly earned the respect of the FRC coaching staff and students. In 2015, Cindy began to apply her love for water and deep understanding of biomechanics to coaching rowing as an assistant coach at the center. She has now joined our team as a full-time coach. When not at the Florida Rowing Center, Cindy lives in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho where she coaches, rows, and plays with her five grandchildren.
LARRY Gluckman- COACH
Larry Gluckman joins the FRC staff for select months during the 2016-2017 season. With five decades in the sport of rowing, Larry has touched nearly every part of the sport. Beginning at Northeastern University under coach Ernie Arlett, Larry rowed in collegiate crews, at the club level at Vesper Boat Club, and on several elite teams including the 1976 U.S. Olympic Rowing Team. His college coaching career had stops at Columbia University, Northeastern Univeristy, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Trinity College. At the elite level, Larry coached at the Pan American Games, the Olympic Games, and the World Rowing Championships at the senior and U-23 levels. His crews have garnered national and international medals.
Larry has had summer coaching stints at the Craftsbury Sculling Center, Black Bear Sculling Camp, Navy Crew Camp, and the Northeast Rowing Camp. Recently, under the direction of Dick Dreissigacker and Judy Geer, Larry started the Small Boat Training Center at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. SBTC was created to improve single, double, and pair rowing amongst college age rowing athletes. During his tenure at SBTC eight crews represented the United States at the U-23 World Rowing Championships. Many of the alumni of this program have moved on to Craftsbury's Green Team for senior level rowing athletes.
For close to 12 years, Larry was the "coach" at Concept2 working in marketing, product development, and human resources. He has become a staple at many of the rowing conferences lecturing on coaching and crew development. He is know for his "free speed" lectures.
Larry lives in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont with Sara his wife of over 40 years. They have three adult daughters.
Marlene Royle- COACH
Marlene joins our coaching staff for select weekends during teh 2016-2017 season. Weekends are designated as "Roylerow Get Together" weekends when Roylerow athletes have a chance to enjoy a weekend of technique training with Marlene and the FRC staff.
A full-time Florida Rowing Center coach from 2005-2009, Marlene is the FRC Marketing Director and Webmaster. Royle coaches at the Whistler Rowing Club, in addition to her writing and work with Roylerow Performance Training Progams. Marlene was among the first coaches in the United States dedicated to masters rowing. Prior to FRC she coached for 20 years at the Craftsbury Sculling Center and was the center’s associate director from 2004-2006. In 1999, Marlene founded Roylerow Performance Training Programs to individually train rowers, designing their workouts and providing support via email. Roylerow.com was the first online coaching service for rowing. Competitively, Marlene rowed for Boston University and Boston Rowing Club; accomplishments include a national collegiate title, a national sculling title, and winning the Head of the Charles. Her books include Tip of the Blade: Notes on Rowing and Skillful Rowing and newest publication Faster Masters, plus a training column appears monthly in the journal, Rowing Magazine.
Roberta Jaro-Reservations Manager and Administrative Assistant
Roberta Jaro took on the role of Administrative Assistant for the Florida Rowing Center in September 2008. Roberta oversees our registration and scheduling of students attending the sculling center. She is also the Chief Operating Officer at United Cerebral Palsy of MetroBoston. Roberta is married to our chief coach, Gordon Hamilton. E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
